Abstract:
Santa Barbara’s harbor dates from the 1920s, when a breakwater was constructed from boulders and rubble. Since the late 1950s and early 1960s, the breakwater has been capped by a concrete walkway and seawall. Largely because of alkali-silica reaction, the concrete structures have exhibited rapid deterioration and have been replaced in the 1970s and 1990s. Phased replacement efforts began again in 2004. The concrete mixture constituents, reinforcing materials, and construction methods for two of the planned three phases are described.
