Abstract:
The paper traces some of the history of concrete pavement joint sealing since the early days of "tar" kettles and hand-held pouring pots. It includes information on the improvements in materials and application techniques accelerated by the military agencies responsible for the airfield pavement maintenance. The important research on shape factor is presented and its influence on current joint sealing methods. The developments in preformed compression seals is discussed as is the research and acceptance of new materials including JFR sealants, PVC, silicone, and other sealants now being used successfully by highway agencies and airfield owners.
