Abstract:
In recent years, health clubs, gymnasiums, stadiums, dance floors, and even office buildings have experienced vibrations due to rhythmic human activities. These vibrations are annoying to building occupants and, in rare cases, are unacceptable for safety. These problems are reviewed and guidelines based on the unifying principle of resonance are presented. The guidelines are contained in Commentary A to Part 4 of the 1990 National Building Code of Canada. Examples are given of the application of the guidelines to the design and evaluation of typical concrete structures and remedial measures to cure vibration problems are reviewed.
