Abstract:
In the study of the elastic properties of any material, the stress-strain curve is a very important aid. Straightness on such a curve is evidence that Hooke's law of proportionality of stress to deformation obtains. The steepness of the curve with respect to the axis of strain is the measure of the rigidity of the material-perpendicularity to this axis denoting infinite stiffness and parallelism to the same axis, complete plasticity.
