Abstract:
The standard construction in use for all the tall metropolitan structure was yesterday, and is perhaps today, the steel skeleton and hollow tile arch system, though, I very much question whether in the latter respect, namely, the floor arch construction, we shall not very soon be compelled to give the place of "standard" to a long span flat ceiling form of reinforced concrete. For while the steel skeleton stands almost unchallenged for heights above 20 ft., we find the concrete floor system used in connection with it almost as frequently as tile-and there are a number of important and practically compelling reason for both of these conditions.
