Abstract:
The formation of laitance in the placing of concrete foundations under water, and in smaller measure in the pouring of concrete in the dry, has been regarded by many construction engineers as one of the inevitables- somewhat in the nature of death and taxes. The feeling has always seemed to be that it is something that we are to have with us always, the only remedy for which is to remove i t after it has formed. Under the best of field conditions, it is literally the case that some laitance will accompany the pouring of concrete under water. It by no means follows, however, that we have no control over the amount, nor that its formation should be allowed to go to a point injurious to the concrete itself.
