Abstract:
Various factors affecting contact pressure distribution under mats and combined footings are reviewed and an analytical tool is provided to include them in mat design. The complexities encountered in the analysis of mats and combined footings are overcome by using the finite element method. The analysis is based on the theory of thin plate bending with the soil behaving as a dense liquid (Winkler foundation). A method of including the effect of the superstructure on the behavior of mats is introduced and an example demonstrating the versatility of the method of solution is presented. The paper further describes a computer program developed at the Portland Cement Association and its use to solve the problem of foundation mats.
