Abstract:
To maintain access across Lake Sakakawea, the existing narrow and functionally obsolete Four Bears Bridge is being replaced with a concrete box girder type. Because of the lake’s size and location in a northern climate, ice floes up to 600 ft (180 m) in diameter can occur. The design team therefore undertook a substantial investigation of ice forces and their effects on the deep foundations.
