            Abstract:
Highway 101, the main transportation corridor to the redwood country of Northwest California, crosses a canyon via the Rock Creek Bridge. Unfavorable features of the existing steel bridge led the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to evaluate, and ultimately recommend rebuilding of, the Rock Creek Bridge. The unique solution of building the new bridge while the existing steel truss remained in place minimized the impact to the commuters and the scenic canyon below.
