Abstract:
Tests made as part of the work of ACI Committee 711 to determine the effect of bar spacing on the strength of precast concrete joists are described. The method of quarter-point loading of commercial joists and the results of tests of bond specimens are briefly reviewed. It is concluded that the strength of the joists is controlled by the character of the weld used to fasten the stirrups to the main steel and that the test method used indicated no correlation between effective bond area of the steel and the load carrying capacity of the joists.
