Abstract:
The effects of lateral loads on arches and the possible magnitude of these effects are considered. An influence table and influence lines are presented for moments and shear in unbraced parabolic arch ribs of constant cross section. These values are for several ratios of rise to span and several ratios of bending to torsional stiffness. The effect of haunching is studied and its possible importance is assesed. Procedures are presented for drawing approximate and exact curves of moments for unbraced arch ribs and for arch ribs braced with struts normal to the ribs. Numerical studies are included.
