Abstract:
Recent Western United States earthquakes, while not the strongest on record, have given an indication of the effectiveness of modern design methods and construction practices in resisting lateral forces. The examples of damage, although slight in some instances, are keys to weakness. The discussion includes cast-in-place reinforced concrete, precast reinforced concrete, and concret masonry structures. The need for competant field inspection is noted, espically when unusual deisng or construction features are involved.
