Abstract:
Current methods of shell design implicitly assume that concrete can take tension. In intermediate steps those methods strive to satisfy strain relation-ships. The procedure developed herein consistently assigns no tension to the concrete and only takes into account considerations of equilibrium, not strain relationships. The procedure requires the addition and subtraction of stress tensors, which is greatly simplified through the use of Mohr’s diagram. It is applicable only to states of pure axial or "membrane" stresses.
