Abstract:Presents condensed history of use of lightweight aggregate. Lightweight concrete is divided into: cellular or foam concrete; no-fines or "popcorn" concrete; and lightweight-aggregate concrete. Properties of lightweight concrete are summarized. Lightweight aggregates, both mineral and vegetable, are enumerated, and the desirable and actual properties of lightweight mineral aggregates are discussed in some detail.
