Abstract:Design and construction features of 146-ft roof girders for Springfield, MO., high school auditorium are discussed. Cast of 5000-psi concrete and prestressed on the ground, the girders were raised between twin concrete columns by the same jacks used for prestressing. Girders were simply supported temporarily while precast roof panels were erected, and frame continuity was later introduced by prestressing the girders to the columns. Stability requirements during construction as well as for the completed structure are considered.
