Abstract:Presents recommended methods and procedures for measuring, mixing, trans-porting, and placing concrete. Best practices are described rather than common practices; thus, the recommendations are made on a "should" basis leaving to the user the responsibility of placing them on a "shall" basis in specifications for a particular job. Although many of the recommendations made can be used in connection with special concretes, it is normal weight concrete to which they principally apply. Among the topics covered are: control, handling, and storage of materias, including pozzolans and admixtures; measurement of constituent materials; measuring equipment; batching tolerances; mixing, retempering of mixes; mixing time; and mixers. Methods of placing such as hoppers, buckets, buggies, belt conveyors, chutes, and drop pipes are covered. Paving equipment is also discussed. Sections are devoted to the special areas of: transporting concrete in revolving drum mixers; transporting centrally-mixed concrete; preplaced aggregate concrete; tremie concrete and equipment; equipment and proportioning for pumping concrete; forms; cleanup and joint preparation; and finishing unformed surfaces. An extensive list of references is given.
