Abstract:
A significant number of advancements in construction technique and structural design emerged during Republican and Imperial Roman times. Some of these advances, particularly the development of Roman concrete, led to natural improvements in the aseismic properties of structures. These developments and their role in resisting seismic attack are investigated. To better understand the nature of these advances in aseismic construction, a brief discussion of the Roman understanding of earthquakes of earthquakes and their effects is also presented.
