Abstract:

This Symposium Volume reports on the latest advancements related to the various facets of modeling and performance assessment of concrete structures. The volume contains 10 papers that were presented at the ACI Convention held in Toronto on April 1st, 2025. The symposium was dedicated to celebrate Prof. Frank J. Vecchio’s extraordinary research contributions and accomplishments in the development of behavioral models and analytical tools for the assessment of concrete structures. The papers cover different aspects related to modeling and performance assessment of concrete structures including developments of the Modified Compression Field Theory, finite element modeling of punching shear in slabs, behavior and modeling of steel fiber reinforced concrete members subjected to torsion, modeling of concrete structures subjected to impact loading, behavior and modeling of slender walls, modeling of concrete frame elements, behavior and modeling of GFRP reinforced members, crack-based assessment of concrete structures, and advancements in modeling deterioration mechanisms and repaired concrete structures. Abstract:

Currently, about 50% of all ready mixed concrete in the United States is produced using Type IL cement. However, in comparison to mixtures with Type I/II cement, there is a lack of information concerning constructability with such mixtures. To create a knowledge base, with a grant from the ACI Foundation, the American Society of Concrete Contractors and Giatec Scientific Inc. are collecting design characteristics of well-performing mixtures with Type IL cement for interior, non-air-entrained concrete floor slabs.

Abstract:

The FORTH Atlanta social club and hotel was designed with a concrete structural diagrid on the outside of the building. The columns were to be placed outboard of the slab edge, the corners at the top and bottom needed to “fold” inward to emphasize the three-dimensional form of the structure, and the flying beam at the roof perimeter was designed to cap off the diagrid.

Abstract:

This month’s Q&A discusses a disagreement between a subcontractor and a general contractor (GC) on tolerances governing concrete work on the project. While the subcontractor believes that 1 in. tolerances in ACI 117-10(15) for horizontal deviations for edge-of-slab location and column location apply, the GC insists on a zero-tolerance condition illustrated in a detail drawing.
