Abstract:
Q. Many of the ACI documents in the 2012 Manual of Concrete Practice now contain language stating: “Reference to this document shall not be made in contract documents.” This is problematic to say the least. In my opinion, a major benefit of having ACI documents is the ability to reference them. To require that we regurgitate the standards in our contract documents strikes me as a waste of time and resources. Can you explain the reason for this language?

Quality control is the means by which a contractor or material producer controls materials and workmanship to meet the prevailing standards of good practice and the contract requirements. The tests summarized in this article represent the current best practices for quality control of concrete paving. The material is adapted from Integrated Materials and Construction Practices for Concrete Pavement: A State-of-the-Practice Manual, published by the National Concrete Pavement Technology Center.

This article presents an overview of the new publication Integrated Materials and Construction Practices for Concrete Pavement: A State-of-the Practice Manual, a 350-page manual produced through a multi-year, FHWA-sponsored effort at Iowa State University’s National Concrete Pavement Technology Center. The manual provides both a training tool and reference to help engineers, inspectors, and contractors optimize the performance of concrete for pavements by bridging the gap between recent research and practice.

Paper describes design examples prepared by Subcommittee 3 of ACI Committee 349 to demonstrate application of Appendix B of the code to the design of steel embedments. The committee report (Reference 1) is included in the 1990 Manual of Concrete Practice. The paper describes some of the design examples and explains key provisions of the code.

This paper is essentially a preview of the work under way by the task committee on structural design of ACI Committee 350 intended to become part of a proposed Recommended Practice for the Design of Concrete Sanitary Structures. The structural portion of the proposed new standard of practice will complement the ACI Building Code, filling in areas not covered by ACI 318-77, but applicable to sanitary structures. It adapts the strength design method of ACI 318-77 to sanitary structures by superimposing structural durability coefficients upon ACI 318-77 load factors to insure service load stresses compati-ble with watertight structures. Crack control pro-cedures of ACI 318-77 are modified and applied with more severe limitations suitable for sanitary exposures. Improved joint and corner details of reinforcement based on recent research, similar to those proposed for the new AC/ Detailing Manual, are presented. A rational method for proportioning shrinkage and temperature reinforcement, taking into account the transverse construction joint spacing, to achieve watertightness, is also proposed for this most critical aspect of sanitary structure design.
