Abstract:
The article discusses slender wall design at service loads with the new expression for the effective moment of inertia introduced into ACI 318-19(22), which now uses a reduced cracking moment for computing deflection. A recommendation is also made to provide a limiting condition for the axial wall load to avoid erroneous calculation of the factored moment by direct calculation.

Slender concrete walls for tilt-up construction are typically designed following the alternative slender wall provisions in ACI 318. Wall designers however may implement different theoretical approaches with the belief that their efforts will increase accuracy and efficiency. Unfortunately, these usually run counter to the observed experimental behavior and can lead to significantly unconservative wall designs.

I’m designing a structure that will be exposed to chlorides in soil, so I’m reviewing the requirements listed in Table 19.3.2.1 —Requirements for concrete by exposure class, in ACI 318- 14.1 The chloride concentration in the soil is lower than the concentration in seawater, so can I specify concrete with a strength value between 2500 and 5000 psi (17.2 and 34.5 MPa), based on C1 and C2 exposure classes, respectively? Does ACI provide recommendations on cleaning concrete slabs during tilt-up construction?
