Abstract:
This guide presents a generally applicable method for selecting mixture proportions for high-strength concrete and optimizing these mixtures proportions on the basis of trial batches. The method is limited to high-strength concrete produced using conventional materials and production techniques. Recommendations and tables are based on current practice and information provided by contractors, concrete suppliers, and engineers who have been involved in projects dealing with high-strength concrete.

Describes, with examples, two methods for proportioning and adjusting proportions of structural grade concrete containing lightweight aggregates. The weight (pycnometer) method uses a specific gravity factor determined by a displacement pycnometer test on the aggregates (Method 1). The weight method also employs the specific gravity factor to estimate the weight per yd3 of fresh concrete. The damp, loose volume method uses the cement-strength relationship for design for all lightweight and sand-lightweight concretes (Method 2). Examples are given for systematic calculation of batch weights, effective displaced volumes, and adjustment to compensate for changes in aggregate moisture content, aggregate proportions, cement content, slump, and/or air content.

The objective of the proposed revision is to allow some flexibility in mix propor-tioning when air-entrained concrete is specified. To this effect three levels of air content are given for each chosen workablity and aggregate size in function of the severity of exposure.

This standard is intended as a supplement to ACI Standard "Recommended Practice for Selecting Proportions for Normal and Heavyweight Concrete (ACI 211.1-74)." The standard describes a procedure for proportioning concretes having slumps in the range of zero to 1 in. and consistencies below this range, for aggregates up to 1 1/2 in. maximum size. Suitable equipment for measuring such consistencies is described. Tables similar to those in ACI 211.1-74 are provided which, along with laboratory tests on physical properties of fine and coarse aggregate yield information for obtaining concrete proportions for a trial mixture. Examples of the use of these tables, in conjunction with tables in ACI 211.1-74 are given. An appendix provides complete conversion of all tabular data to metric system units and shows a sample problem worked out with metric values.

This recommended practice covers the constructron of concrete pavements and concrete bases without attempting to include inflexlble specifications for procedures, materials or equipment. References are made to specifications, but only as a guide to enable a selection of requirements suitable for a particular location or class of work. The document is slanted to some degree toward use by agencies other than state highway departments or turn pike authorities with presumably large and experienced engineering staffs, and with knowledge of past performance of pavements in the area. Sections are devoted to specifying, sampling, and testing materials, and to the possible influence of materials on skid resistance economy, and durability. Maximum aggregate sixe is mentioned as sometimes relating to pavement durability. Subgrades and subbases are treated only as to final preparatron for Paving-Recommendations for forms are included as well as recommendations for projects using slipforms. Arrangement of joints is described, and references are given for guidance in using reinforcement sections on normal and high-early-strength concrete portioning rely heavily on refe:ence to the report of AC1 Commifiee 211, but point out the special problems connected with pavement concretes and the use of admixtures in pavement concrete. Sections on mixing, placing, finishing, and curing concrete refer to other ACI reports where pertinent, but make reccommendations for the special handling necessary in the case of pavements. Concrete bases are treated where procedures vary from those used for pavements, and recommendations and references are grven for cold and hot weather concreting.
