Abstract:
Temperature and thermal stress in young concrete were measured using thermocouples and effective stress meters. A method of analyzing thermal stress was used where stress history was calculated from temperature history. Measured and calculated results showed good agreement. Cracks in a thick concrete wall were found to have penetrated the full thickness of the wall. A correlation was observed between crack width pattern and temperature distribution in the wall. The facts show that the temperature drop from peak temperature to atmospheric temperature is a measure for a presumption of crack width of massive concrete.
