Abstract:
Presents method for direct analytical determination of the natural period of vibration of building frames. It is shown that the characteristic deflection curve to which the freely vibrating structure oscillates may be determined by a process of successive converging ap- proximations, the method of dynamic convergence. Simplified slope-deflection formulas are used in determining the shape of the curve. Knowing the shape of the curve, the period may be calculated by compar- ing the potential energy of the deflected structure with the kinetic energy of the system. The method is applicable to buildings, bridges, and other structures.
