Abstract:
Pullout tests were conducted to evaluate end anchorage for deformed bars with a nominal yield strength of 60,000 psi (4220 kg/cm2) embedded to conditions approximating those in a semi-infinite medium. Three sizes of bars, #4 (1.3 cm diameter), #7 (2.2 cm), and #11 (3.5 cm) and three types of anchors, straight, right angle hook and semicircular hook, were studied. For a given displacement at the loaded end, the average bond stress increases and the bar stress decreases with increase in bar diameter. Furthermore, the effectiveness of an anchor is a direct function of the concrete strength. Average bond stress appears to be the most useful design criterion.
