Abstract:
It is quite well established that sustainable solutions aim to satisfy economic viability, social equity requirements and environmental protection issues, meaning getting a proper balance among people, profit and planet needs. During last year, industry and designers are proposing a constantly increasing number of solutions aiming to balance the lack of the traditional ones with respect to one or more of the above-mentioned pillars. A promising framework is given by hybridization of concrete with timber. However, it is noticed that i) truly hybrid construction systems are vaguely explored, having research and practice mainly focused on composite elements only ii) few case studies are presented to show the potential benefits with respect to real applications. The work initially proposes assessment criteria for the sustainability potential of traditional RC and hybrid TC buildings, successively discussing an application to a mid-rise building in the Milan area.
