Abstract:
The recent years’ enhancement of traffic on roads and airport runways put under the spotlight some new emerging needs such as the necessity of fast and reliable materials for roads and infrastructure maintenance, so as to minimize the shutdown periods and the related issues. In the same ages, the enhanced environmental consciousness led to an increase search of the eco-friendly solutions, so as to minimize the effect of the climate changes caused by the human activities.
The use of an innovative type of binder such as the Calcium Sulphoaluminate Cement (CSA) could be the right answer to both the issues, since it couples the benefits of a rapid-hardening cement with an outstanding C02 emission reduction with respect to ordinary portland cement (OPC).
This paper presents the performance at laboratory and industrial scale of a CSA-based concrete mixture designed to meet extremely strict requirements in terms of mechanical resistance evolution and durability, such as the case of highways or airport runways repair, in order to minimize the closing time and the bother related to the infrastructure serviceability interruption, even at low temperatures.
