Abstract:
Along with the particularities stemming from the magnitude of structural system stress and complexity, distinctive buildings (understood to be those that entail complexities whose solution calls for unconventional or innovative solutions) should be able to accommodate the requisites, characteristics and needs intrinsic to the scale of the undertaking. With their suggestive and effective ability to meet these dual demands, post-tensioning systems can suitably combine and solve the problems posed by both worlds. The present article analyzes the application of post-tensioning to three recently erected distinctive buildings: the municipal theatre and auditorium at Torrevieja, the new headquarters for the courts of law at Ciudad Real and the Caixaforum building in Madrid. In addition, the paper evaluates the application of post-tensioning in distinctive structures, discussing a series of guidelines and criteria to be considered in the design of such structural solutions geared specifically to distinctive buildings.
