Abstract:
Joints are placed in buildings to control the effect of imposed strains (temperature, shrinkage...) in the structure. However, several constructive and structural problems are originated due to the placement of such elements, increasing the final execution and maintenance costs. The design of jointless buildings requires a detailed assessment of the internal forces created by these actions. In the first part, this paper investigates this topic presenting an analytical model to study a rather complex and highly redundant system in a simple way, by adopting several reasonable assumptions. The model is applied to a real case. In a second part all the factors that are involved in this problems are reviewed.
