Abstract:
The erection of beams with cranes is the most common building procedure for precast bridges. However, sometimes the access of cranes to the site is not allowed, and different building procedures must be used. Among them, spanwise construction with stepping formwork equipment over the piers might be an excellent alternative if the number of beams to place is enough for saving the cost of the elements employed. The analysis for span by span construction in four important precast bridges in Catalunya is described. Formal aspects and slenderness of the piers guided to a complex analysis of building procedure, in which forces acting on piers during the construction were carefully taken into account.
