Abstract:
This article presents a general overview of the extension to Madrid-Barajas airport, from an airport standpoint. After an introduction on the Barajas airport?s role in air traffic, both European and to America, the basic references of the extension undertaken and, along general lines, the basic elements making up this extension are discussed from an airport?s operating viewpoint. On the one hand, the three basic buildings forming the extension (Parking and set down/pick up areas, Terminal building and Satellite building) are presented and, on the other, certain basic elements for the working of the airport itself such as the APM (Automatic People Mover), the Automated Baggage Handling System (ABHS) and the Airport Management Centre (AMC).
