Abstract:
This paper describes how Shock Absorbing Concrete (SACON) can be effectively used to trap bullets. It has been estimated that over 100,000 lb (454,000 kg) of lead is deposited in the environment, primarily in the soil, annually on Army small-arms training ranges alone. SACON elements have been developed that blend with the surroundings on ranges, and trap virtually all rounds that impact them. Tests have shown that little or no lead leaches out of SACON blocks containing small-arms rounds. Used SACON blocks can be processed to remove the lead and recycle the aggregates, or can be placed in landfills with other industrial wastes.
