Abstract:
The different treatments of the N-factor in the body of ACI 318-95 and in the Appendix of B of that Code are discussed in relation to one specific column. Beams are also addressed. A suitable replacement for the present set of N-factors is the use of partial factors of safety applied separately to the concrete and reinforcement. The use of partial factors can also lead to simpler, more straightforward treatment of maximum steel areas or steel ratios than exists in the present code, especially when applied to complex sections.
