Abstract:
In the winter of 1982-83, steel fiber reinforced shotcrete was used to line the tunnels being constructed through the Rocky Mountains on the British Columbia Railway Tumbler Ridge Branch Line. This article describes the basis for selection of steel fiber reinforced shotcrete for the tunnel lining, gives shotcrete mix proportioning and specification data, reviews shot-Crete construction techniques and the quality assurance program, and gives typical shotcrete performance data. This project demonstrated that steel fiber reinforced shotcrete can provide avialable technical, economic, and practical alternative to conventionalmesh reinforced shotcrete for lining underground openings. *
