Abstract:
Silo walls are subjected to simultaneous action of tension force and bending moment. Tension chords of transfer trusses and vierendeel girders used in multistory buildings must also be designed for the combined effects of large tension forces and moments. A simple method that can be used for both design and review of these structures is given. The method consists of establishing two linear equations that accurately represent the tension branch of the ultimate interaction diagram. The required area of steel reinforcement is obtained after solving the two equations individually. Two design examples are used to illustrate the method. One of the examples is a silo wall, and the other is an individual structural member as found in a transfer truss or a vierendeel girder.
