Abstract:
The corrosion of steel fibres at the surface of a cement composite affects the aesthetic of the structure. Few studies in the literature focus on establishing relationships between the fibre content and the surface corrosion of specimens when subjected to aggressive conditions. The objective of this study is to evaluate the correlation between the fibre content and the level of surface corrosion from a quantitative point of view. Two mixes of high performance cementitious composites with different steel fibre contents (90 and 190 kg/m3) and the same water/cement ratio were designed. Prismatic specimens were cast and put through a cyclic process of wetting (48 hours submerged in salt water) and drying (48 hours at ambient temperature). Every 10 cycles, pictures were taken of the surface of each specimen and the area of corrosion was measured by means of an algorithm developed for the analysis. Results showed that the increase of fibre content is correlated with the increment of surface area of corrosion.
