Abstract:
Practitioners tend to design underground building structures per either the AASHTO Tunnel Guide or per the International Building Code (IBC) using load factors from the AASHTO Tunnel Guide. The advantages and disadvantages of both approaches are discussed. Based on the author’s engineering judgment and experience, a compromise application of load factors from the AASHTO Tunnel Guide in IBC load combinations is provided.
