Abstract:
The recent revision of a guideline in the United States allows for the first time ever the qualification of post-installed reinforcing bars for end anchorages and overlap splices. The design of end anchorages and overlap splices with post-installed reinforcing bars can now be carried out using provisions for cast-in-place reinforcing bars. Alternatively, post-installed reinforcing bars may also be qualified and designed as adhesive anchors. The two qualification and design methods are very different in their fundamental concepts and calculated capacities. This paper provides a concise description of the qualification methods for post-installed reinforcing bars. Moreover, a unique overview and systematic review of the design methods is given. The underlying concepts of both qualification and design methods are compared, and the capacities calculated according to both methods are discussed for representative examples. The differences of the outcome identify fields of further studies of interest.
