Abstract:
Silica fume is a by-product resulting from the reduction of high-purity quartz with coal in electric arc furnaces in the manufatures of silicon and ferrosilicon alloys. This report briefly describes the physical, chemical, and pozzolanic properties of siica fume. Methods of using silica fume in concrete are mentioned, and the properties of fresh and hardered concrete incorporating it are described. The durability of siica-fume concrete is discussed, and the limitations of its use in concrete are outlined. The report is concluded by listing research needs.
