Abstract:
Concrete cylinders tested in compression often have irregularities on one or both ends. Therefore, some type of end preparation is necessary. This paper compares the static modulus of elasticity data of 24 pairs of cylinders capped with neoprene pads in steel end caps to an equal number of pairs of cylinders capped with traditional sulfur mortar: The cylinders tested were at design strength levels of 2000, 4000, and 6000 psi. Several modulus prediction equations were also examined. Neoprene capping had similar results to sul$ur capping in regard to modulus of elasticity, and no practical significance is thought to exist.
