Abstract:
This paper presents a comprehensive analytical method to predict the behavior of externally prestressed concrete beams throughout the entire range of loading up to ultimate load. The method takes into account all important factors such as material nonlinearity, shift of cable eccentricity, and the friction at deviators for external cables. Furthermore, the method is applicable for a general polygonal-shaped tendon profile with any number of deviators. This method is validated using the test results of the authors as well as results available in the literature. The effects offriction at deviators and shift of cable eccentricity on the behavior of externally prestressed con-crete beams are illustrated with a numerical example. It is concluded that using this method, the complete flexural behavior of prestressed concrete beams with external as well as internal unbonded tendons can be predicted satisfactorily from zero load to the ultimate load stage.
