Abstract:
By instrumenting the first air-entrained high-performance bridge in North America, the characteristics and reliabiiity of thermocouples and vibrating wire extensometers could be tested on a real structure. The experimental structure was chosen for the simplicity of its conception and operation. The temperature variations in the concrete slab generally followed ambient temperature cycles. The evolution of total strain included thermohygrometric, as well as physical-chemical phenomena in the concrete. The periodic variations observed for temperature and strain also apply to other concrete structures that are influenced by seasonal thermohygrometric cycles.
