Abstract:
The 42-story Barnett Plaza in Tampa is the tallest concrete builidng on the west coast of Florida. Value-engineering drawings prepared for both steel and concrete structural schemes and for mat, pier, and pile foundations were evaluated by three separate contractors and showed the concrete scheme on a mat foundation to be most economical. The concrete structure derives a large part of its efficiency from haunched-girder frames which engage exterior columns as tension and compression elements to resist over-turning. These frames help to eliminate the need to have deep spandrel beams along the long faces of the building, this simplifying formwork.
