Abstract:
The indestructible organization known as Standard Oil was built by Henry Flagler and John D. Rockefeller in the 1870s. In 1882, Flagler came down with a mild liver ailment and took the opportunity to retreat to Florida. He went to St. Augustine. In his own words, he said: "I was surprised when I got here. There had been a wonderful change in the former state of things...I found...that class of society one meets at the great watering places of Europe - men who go there to enjoy themselves and not for the benefit of their health...and it occurred to me very strongly that someone with sufficient means ought to provide accommodations for that class of people who are not sick but who come here to enjoy the climate and have plenty of money but could find no satisfactory way of spending it."
