Abstract:
This is the second of a two-part article discussing bridge structures for the METRO transit rail service of Fairfax County, Va. The engineering repair design consisted of substituting simply supported, single-cell, externally post-tensioned segmental box girders for three continuous, twin-cell, cast-in-place box girders. These substitute structures were approved by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). This two-part paper summarizes the static and dymanmic load test program conducted for the retrofitted externally post-tensioned segmental box-girder bridges which comprise the J2e aerial structures. A brief history of the distressed bridge structures, illustrations, and proposed repair is provided in Part I of this article found in Concrete International, August 1996.
