Abstract:
In 1893 the United States was in the grip of an economic depression. People were being fed in soup kitchens, and there was little construction work being done. To divert public attention from such problems, Nashville civic leaders proposed a great exposition to celebrate the centennial of Tennessee's admission to the Union in 1896. The highlight of the exposition was a series of buildings of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman style.
