Abstract:
Rapid City is in western South Dakota on the edge of the Black Hills. In 1993, the Dahl Fine Arts Council decided to build an art project as part of a Rapid City beautificatio project. The purpose was to expand the local public arts program through a medium that is durable, inexpensive, and produced locally. The Co., a major producer of portland cement, for sponsorship of the project. Together they decided that the project should be made from localy produced concrete. The contest generated several interesting proposals ranging from a cast-in-place buffalo to a precast trout. Marty Wanserski, and art teacher from Vermillion, South Dakota, submitted the Rapid Trout design, which was chosen for the project, because brown trout is a native of South Dakota.
