Abstract:
On November 14, 1994, the base raft portion of the Hibernia Gravity Base Structure (GBS) was floated out of its dry dock and towed almost 3 km (2 miles) to the Dee Water Site in Bull Arm, Newfoundland. At the time it weighed 120,000 Mg (132,300 ton). This event brought the drydock construction phase to a successful conclusion on schedule. Major construction activities have occurred and some of the construction methods have been modified. These modifications were proposed by a joint venture of Norwegian Contractors Newfoundland and Peter Kiewit Sons (NCN/PKS), who were awarded a construction management contract for the GBS in the Spring of 1994.
