Abstract:
The concrete industry has an important stake in quality of concrete construction. The image of the industry and its ability to move into new markets can be affected by the visible signs of unsatisfactory con-crete in the structures and facilities we use every day. Getting contractors and builders to order proper concrete mixtures for the work is one important step to improving the adequacy of concrete in service. The use of local technical organizations and within-company procedures are recommended to help cate-gorize typical concrete end uses and channel concrete orders into appropriate and practical specifications. The characteristics, advantages, and disadvant-ages of both performance and prescription specification approaches are discussed. The overall objective is to help clarify the most important considerations in formulating a proper order which will minimize on-the-job and later service problems.* .
