Abstract:
In the U.S., construction of thin shell concrete roofs seems to have lost ground to other structural systems that cover large open spaces. The primary reason for this relative decline is high labor content. In the Sovietis being solved by concentrated lize the shell construction process. describes a precast shell system, developed at the Kiev Zniiep Institute in Kiev, which formwork nor falsework. Also discussed are laboratory experiments and example structures built in the USSR. The inherent advantages of the system and additional research needed to make thin shell concrete roofs a viable solution in the United States are summarized.
