Abstract:
This article describes the construction of the cold mill shop of the Seamless Steel Tube Plant at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Tiruchirapalli, India. The building is 277 m (908.8 ft) long and 60 m (196.9 ft ) wide and was built entirely with precast concrete elements. The primary roof trusses with 30 m (98.4 ft) long spans were precast and prestressed at the site and erected in position. Girders with 12 m (39.4 ft) and 18 m (59.1 ft) long spans for the overhead gantry cranes were also precast. Site tests involving strain measurements with mechanical gages were carried out on roof trusses under actual loads.
